You can use your reaction when hit by a melee or unarmed weapon attack, before knowing the damage done, reducing the damage taken by half. If you are wearing light armor or no armor at all, you can immediately, as part of the same reaction, make a weapon attack against an enemy within 10 feet of you (if you are using a weapon with an extension, this range increases to 15 feet).
