O jogo de RPG, em sua maior parte, costuma ser flexível e fluido, sempre adaptando a situação aos atos dos jogadores. A ambientação costuma estar na mente de seus jogadores, com seus arredores descritos pelo Mestre para que todos possam imaginar a cena. Porém, alguns Mestres podem optar por utilizar imagens para ampliar a imersão, além de alguns Mestres gostarem de trazer músicas ou efeitos sonoros para dar uma ambientação melhor ao jogo. Em alguns casos, é comum que se tenha um mapa para que os jogadores tenham noção de onde estão seus personagens e o posicionamento de seus inimigos, ajudando em sua tomada de decisões.
