The Mysteries of Magic

Magic in Runeterra acts almost like a second breath of air for the vast majority of creatures in existence. Not only fauna, but also flora and even inanimate objects are connected to magic and are permeated by mana, the energy that is both the manifestation and the fuel for magic to be executed.

Studying this energy, mana, led the first Arcanes to understand how it works, and over time, by always adding new ideas, theories and tests, they were able to discover some of its mysteries. For this reason, Mystery is the name given to the grouping of magics, or spells that have similarities, either because of their central element or because of the way in which magic is conducted and channeled.

The world of Runeterra is simultaneously a material and spiritual world, with both realms existing simultaneously in the same place in parallel, separated only by an invisible veil. Thus, what happens in one realm, more often than not, ends up reflecting on the other.

Due to its dual nature, material and spiritual, the world of Runeterra encompasses both of these forms in its magic, with Elemental magic being a reflection of the energy that permeates the world through magic, in addition to Spiritual magic, which uses this source of energy to access the second realm.

A third form of magic, Celestial, can also be found in Runeterra, this being the rarest of the three as it is linked to the manifestations of the Celestial Realm, something outside the world, but which has emanations that reach the world, be it physical or spiritual.

The Arcane understood this triple nature of magic in Runeterra, dividing it into these three magical pillars, but as they studied further and compiled their practices, they realized that they were slowly unraveling these mysteries, grouping them logically by having proximity in method, energy or source of magic.

A Mystery is a grouping of spells that work in a similar way, or at least with similar rules, usually derived from or simply resulting from minor differences in the manipulation of mana.

List of Mysteries of Celestial Magic

Chronomancy

Chronomancy magic primarily affects the fabric of space-time on the time axis. Although its action is that of Elemental magic, as it acts on the material plane, where time is a constant perceived by the beings that inhabit it, the manipulation of chronomantic magic itself is a celestial mystery, as it uses knowledge derived from celestial wisdom and the way it is used is through the celestial energy originating from this higher realm.

Chronomancy works in two main ways, one through the overwhelming entropy of the passage of time, the chronal energy, and through the oscillations of this axis, causing reflections of these oscillations to manifest themselves through a reverberation. It is like saying that by making a creature age, the caster is only affecting the axis of time, extracting the entropy of that creature's future and directing it in the present.

As it is an energy from a Celestial source, its use is quite complicated, making more refined uses of it rare, normally limited to the two forms described above.

Since time in the material world acts in one direction, chronal energy can be understood as the frictional energy generated by the oscillation of time, as if delaying a clock in progress inevitably causes it to have to accelerate its task to synchronize with the current time, with the energy released by the acceleration of this hand towards its destination causing the impact that is known as chronal energy.

Spacemancy

If one of the axes of space-time is worked by chronomancy, the other is spacemancy. Just like its “sister”, spacemancy acts in material reality, thus connecting to elemental magic, which is one of the foundational pillars of physical reality. However, the energies that direct it are of celestial origin, which makes it work through a mystery derived from this magical pillar.

The flow of space is much more gentle and malleable than that of time, for although time has a constant direction and inevitably recovers its exact trajectory, space is not so demanding about reestablishing its pattern, adapting and molding itself throughout its entire extent to movement in any direction.

For this reason, modeling space itself is not a form of magic that causes harm by its very nature, with the only inviolable rule being that two bodies in the same vibration cannot occupy the same place. When this happens, the collision between the two bodies is usually catastrophic and has an explosive potential much more dangerous than temporal manipulations. All kindness has a limit.

Moving things through space, creating temporary derivative spaces that are allocated in the realm of possibilities, spacemancy usually deals with this type of manipulation of reality, acting much more in a utilitarian way than in a warlike or armamental way. However, just as every space has something “filling” it when a portal is opened, even if it is a fissure where there is nothing, this vacuum usually takes its toll, causing a lot of damage to those who are directed by these spells.

Gravitomancy

Like its “cousins” chronomancy and spacemancy, gravitomancy is based on a celestial energy source acting in the physical realm. Gravitomancy studies the forces of attraction and repulsion that exist in everything, even in the most singular composition of bodies, with its most common application being precisely the action on this force of repulsion or attraction.

A body that has part of it “energized” by this magic can cause each part that makes up a certain piece to be attracted to a central nucleus, causing damage precisely by the forced displacement to that point, as if each part were torn apart and sucked to a center. However, when these parts are deprived of this force that keeps them together, they separate, causing damage precisely by the rupture of that being, as if the force that keeps them together were nullified.

Through Gravitomancy, a point in space-time can be manipulated to become so dense that it consumes even the light that tries to pass through it, this creates what is called Dark Matter, a substance that attracts everything around it with a devastating force, but being extremely unstable and fleeting, dissipating almost instantly.

Finally, through the manipulation of this energy, celestial bodies can be attracted, or even the many fragments existing in the air can be quickly and violently grouped together, creating bodies that can be thrown against a target, normally in the form of meteors.

Runomancy

If the other celestial mysteries use celestial energy to affect space-time or the “glue” that holds things together in reality, Runomancy focuses on exactly that celestial energy used to do so. The study of this mystery is the closest there is to studying the composition of the celestial realm, through the emanation of energy that derives from it.

At its basis, Runomancy manifests celestial simulacra or those imbued with this energy, making this mystery operate in different rules of composition of reality, whether for a temporary suspension of it, or just for the manifestation of this energy in its purest form, which causes the rupture in physical or spiritual bodies.

Controlling Runomancy is extremely complicated and in some places it can even be seen as heresy if used outside of a sacred context or dedicated to the celestials. Perhaps the mystery least known and studied by mortals precisely because of the scarcity of manifestations of this energy.

The exception to this is when the caster attunes his magic, harnessing celestial energy, to create a reverberation with the Global Runes, which are like the fundamental building blocks that make up reality, both physical and material as well as spiritual and fleeting.

List of Elemental Magic Mysteries

General Elemental

The Physical Realm is made up of elemental energies in varying degrees of harmony, which is why the principle behind elemental magic becomes universally accessible to those who study it. The General Elemental Mystery consists of basic studied ways of manipulating a given elemental energy to which a caster has access.

The magics of the General Elemental Mystery are the most basic and structural magics for dealing with these different energies. They start from a principle common to all elements and their use is the basis for the particularities of each element to be found and studied, with due respect to their differences and forms.

Due to this structural characteristic, the spells linked to this mystery cannot act in a more in-depth way on the elements involved, making it impossible to use these particularities of each element, exploring them in a more effective, improved or functional way.

Water

The mystery of Water deals with this primary element in its most diverse simple forms, although it can be combined with air through humidity or a block of ice, the mystery understands the fundamental properties of this element.

Because most living and organic bodies are made up of a large proportion of water, the mystery of water is extremely functional and efficient in dealing with healing and recovery from injuries. The destructive potential of the elemental mystery of water comes primarily from manipulating it, using it quickly or under immense pressure to create the desired effects.

As all bodies have a proprioception linked to their balance, effects that affect the water contained in these bodies in a beneficial way are immensely easier to conjure, while effects that seek to use this element for a destructive potential encounter resistance. However, at higher levels of conjuring this mystery, a conjurer begins to conquer formulas that make him capable of interfering in a harmful and destructive way in the water contained in other bodies.

In practical terms, it is as if a unit of a being in itself has a harmonic field that protects it from interference in the elements contained within it, not responding in the same way and with the same efficiency as they usually respond when this element is found outside of a living body.

Arctic

The duality of the water element underlies the main characteristic of the Arctic Mystery, an extremely powerful yet disordered lively pulse, which individually causes only harm to life. The opposition of earth and air, the formative elements, Flora and Ice, creates the necessary suspension so that this vital profusion can enter into harmony and be used magically.

Once the harmony of the element is achieved by this opposition, each element of this opposition can contribute characteristics that make this mystery a structure that protects and strengthens life, while allowing this elemental life to achieve manifestation in proximity, or parallelism, to the spirit.

Through this element it is possible for life to not only be restored and strengthened, but also generated through the vital infusion of the doubly typified water element, with its ethereal connection provided by the air element and consolidated and solidified by the earth element. It is through this infusion of life doubly inserted into a physical reality, through the opposition of the air element, that the existence of True Ice, an elemental and spiritual substance with extremely powerful capabilities, is possible.

Crystal

Crystals are solid forms that repeat their three-dimensional structure in a specific and easily replicable way. As a tertiary element derived from magma and flora, crystal is an element that acts in the protection of a body, in the conservation of energies and structures, precisely what derives both from the principle of solidity arising from the cooling of magma (solidity) and from the principle of organic life derived from flora (wood).

The magics of the elemental mystery of the Crystal are fully attuned to this structure of “maintaining” or “preserving”, which is why this mystery acts so categorically and expressively in protecting the target to whom these magics are directed. Thanks to this principle, this mystery acts minimally in a harmful or destructive way.

Even if the application of a destructive form exists, it is not the easiest and is not something that has been documented or studied in depth, especially due to the lack of synergy for this purpose. Due to the way this element behaves, any harmful effects that exist as a byproduct of the conjuration are minimized, making it less interesting to use this mystery in studies to find destructive forms.

Desert

The earth element is opposed by the air element. The Mystery of the Desert can be understood philosophically (and even energetically) with the earth as a stone, passing through the action of the air, transforming into grains like those of sand. For this reason, it is plausible to understand the Desert element as a physical and even metaphysical corrosion of something.

It would not be wrong to say that the Mystery of the Desert derives in a certain way from the Mystery of the Earth and, since the latter in turn deals with the material solidity of things, its derived mystery also ends up needing a physical presence, just like the Mystery of the Earth, acting in a multiplicative way when imbued with mana. There are two ways to reach the Mystery of the Desert, both of which involve the Mystery of the Earth. The first way is through the presence of the opposite element, Air, also seen energetically as “the shadow” of the Earth, an opposing element that in perfect balance tends to nullify each other. The second way is through the Air element seeking solidity, precisely with its “shadow” being the earth. In practical terms, you can access the Desert through the Earth directly, or through Air in combination with the Earth.

The principle behind this Mystery is the inevitable corrosion of all that is physical and material, it is a reminder that everything belongs to a cycle and must fade as part of its journey. Perhaps because the basic structure of its component is Sand, this Mystery is little worked on away from Shurima, where it has been maintained since time immemorial.

However, some of the great secrets of this mystery were lost, being rescued by the return of Azir, who brought with him the advanced foundations for the evolution of this Mystery. Once he took some students, many of these principles came back into force and ran through Runeterra, even if only by example.

Flora

The Mystery of Flora can also be called the Mystery of Wood, as it operates mainly with this secondary element, the fruit of water and earth, an element that carries the inheritance of the vital force of the organisms of the first and the solidity of the second. If for Earth a physical object is necessary as a basis for conjuration, the same is true for water, but this is extremely present in the bodies of organic creatures.

For this reason, the vitality present in water can be consolidated and maintained by the solidity of the earth. The Mystery of Flora works mainly with plants, but due to its deep connection with vitality, it ends up creating a spiritual workspace with life itself, which means that it can also deal with life, especially animals.

This extreme vital force that is provided by the strength of Flora is the same responsible for interfering so effectively with the spirit, because vitality is the reaffirmation of life. For this reason, magics linked to wood have great power against spiritual creatures, if not to destroy them, to contain them.

Fire

One of the primary and basic elements in the construction of the Material Kingdom, Fire combines with other elements to create movement, whether it be generating life or dynamism. Fire can be understood not only through a burning flame, but also through the heat emanated by bodies full of life. However, fire has a limited connection with vitality; the energy of fire can only become adequate for life when in the presence of other elements to balance it.

The Mystery of Fire understands that everything that exists is energy, from people, to stones and even the air. Everything is energy in some state of rest, in some state of stability. Through this Mystery, this stability is broken, causing the release of energy to take form through flames.

Manipulating fire does not require its presence, but the conditions for it to exist. In this way, water, being the opposite element, can remove the most basic condition. Air, in turn, is combustible and provides the best way for it to spread. Interestingly, water, when contained by the emanation of the earth, ceases to have this totally opposing potential, and can also become fuel for it.

Ice

Through the interaction of water and air, two fruits emerge: vapor, which is the predominance of Air, while Ice brings emanations of Earth into the water itself, solidifying it. Metaphysically, air lends water its property of becoming “ethereal,” with this property finding a home in the life provided by water. Like a pair giving up some characteristics in favor of something for two, ice unifies air and water in a solid form, especially through the control and dispersion of the power of fire existing in water. Just as fire is energy and transit, when deprived of this, water condenses through the emanations of the earth.

The Mystery of Ice brings solidity to air and water which, in union, become a palpable and solid physical presence, but as this is not the nature of these two elements, this is transitory, reflected in the fact that the ice melts, transforming into water and releasing the air trapped within it.

This volatility of the Ice Element is lost in the existence of True Ice, a form of ice that crystallizes its elemental existence as a solid point in the Material Realm. The secrets to its creation are kept private to the Great Spirits connected to it, perhaps passed on to those closest to it, but still, there is no information that any mortal has managed to understand this possible mystery. Could True Ice be a Spiritual Elemental Mystery? Or could there be some celestial component in it? This is a great debate among scholars that seems to never end.

Infernal

The Infernal Mystery is based on the understanding of the transitional element Hell, understood by fire being modified by the shadow of its opposite element, water. Once Fire receives these emanations from its opposite element, it also receives fluidity and an internal conflict of energies in conflict, for this reason, the Infernal element is extremely unstable with fire seeking its primacy through continuous propagation.

This principle can be perceived in the spells conjured by this Mystery; generally, Infernal spells propagate their strength in a violent way, as if the fluidity of water itself, being part of fire as a principle, made it seek its own vitality, incinerating everything within its reach.

Working with the Infernal Mystery is to understand these powers of fluidity and propagation. When an element has part of its balance broken by the shadow of its opposite, it receives attributes not only from that opposite element, but also from the other two primary elements, as happens with the search for solidity of the infernal flames (earth) and their attempt to seek a liberated essence (air).

Saying that Infernal flames are flames with a will of their own and that they seek their freedom may be a more accurate path than one might imagine. It is not uncommon for conjurers of the Infernal Mystery to end up being consumed by their own out-of-control Infernal flames. Whether through misapplication or some malicious intelligence that this Mystery carries within itself.

Light

Light is one of the two primary elements, along with Shadow. To some extent, all primary elements are fluctuations of the Light element (or energy) in a dance of solidification and dissolution (solve et coagula) brought about by its interaction with the Shadow element, its opposite and complement. Philosophically, Light can only be perceived through the presence of Shadow, if not at all, through its dilution to form colors and tones.

The Mystery of Light is immensely rare, only proportional to its versatility. Condensing light is paralyzing energy and transforming it into matter, in its most diverse levels and vibrations. Some theorists claim that the four primary elements are light in various stages, with the closest to the origin being fire, which emanates light and heat, but in a more brutal form, capable of burning everything around it.

In turn, Light as a Mystery can create fleeting forms and even extremely powerful rays of pure concentrated energy, something extremely effective especially against the creatures of darkness, in which light acts as a destabilizing agent of everything. As all forms of life carry the primary and primordial elements within themselves, the interaction of this magic tends to be extremely efficient when used in a warlike manner.

A complex principle in which the Light is wrapped is a matter of discussion among conjurers of all ages. The Light itself, although Elemental, is also a Celestial and Spiritual Element. This complexity can be perceived through its three magical forms, with each of them receiving direct emanations from the three realms, but as a manifestation with a greater alignment with one of them in particular.

The first principle, Celestial, manifests itself in the light through the Solar emanation. When this emanation is incorporated into the Light, it receives an amplification of its powers through this Celestial energy, an energy that connects to the creation of the stars and even, perhaps, to the stellar flames.

The second principle, Spiritual, manifests itself in the Light through the Lunar emanation. While the Solar emanation has a clear celestial charge, the Lunar principle finds its home in the Spiritual. This makes Light a fundamental piece in the puzzle of reality, being a principle similar to magic itself, Triple in its expression and Triple in its manifestation.

Finally, the Elemental principle, which creates the Luminary manifestation, is a physical and almost material state, something that has similarity to how Light becomes the basis for the four primary elements to exist and manifest, this principle is the purest expression of Light as an element.

Magma

The Mystery of Magma centered on this secondary element works with the two principles of the base elements, fire providing a destructive and mobile power and earth providing solidity through a defensive and maintaining power. Through the negation of factors, the movement of fire is contained by the immobility of earth, making this energy much more stable although it is still in transition.

The fundamental principle of this mystery lies in the dual function of protecting and attacking simultaneously, using these two natures combined and creating effects that seek to maintain the solidity that comes from the earth, but giving it fluctuation and movement that comes from fire. If the principle of negation of factors is a way of understanding the interaction of the two elements, complementarity is part of this reasoning, where the fleetingness of fire is nullified by the solidity of the earth and the immobility of the earth is nullified by the movement of fire.

Although the mystery of the Earth works with existence, requiring material artifice as a focus of manifestation and transmutation, fire yields this attribute to the mystery, making the physical need dispensable through the transmutation of the magical energy itself in the construction of the material bases for this mystery to manifest itself.

Metal

To understand the mystery of metal, it is necessary to understand its constituent elements. As a tertiary element, metal derives from magma and storms, thus having a triple inheritance of fire, but in solidity provided by the earth and its magnetic fluidity being provided by the combination of air and fire generating the storm.

Just like the mystery of Earth, the mystery of metal works with existence, which is why the presence of material focus is necessary as a vehicle for transmutation and conduction of magical energy. Although fire, just like in the mystery of magma, gives the attribute of transmutation of magical energy, the triple existence fed by air causes this precept to be lost, leaving it up to the earth to stabilize this combination of energy.

In this way, the mystery of metal operates precisely through manipulations on a magical and physical level, especially through magnetic charges and charges of magical attraction and repulsion, given by the interaction of fire and air. The opposition of Air and Earth can generate in turn the desert and sound, each in its degree of elemental manifestation, for this reason, metal possesses the multiple characteristic of the power of fire consolidated through earth, being able to express sound, but being vulnerable to the action of corrosion, the desert.

Blizzard

As a reflection of air, imbued with the electricity and fluidity of water, the mystery of the Blizzard operates primarily through the fluidity in containment created by the opposing movement of the two internal forces, a direct inheritance of the interaction of the opposites of water and fire mediated by air, creating the framework for this mystery to operate in the transition of energies, in the containment of this transition caused by the imbalance of air in vulnerability through its opposition to earth.

While water seeks this fluidity, which when added to air creates ice, the blizzard exists through the disharmony generated by the reverberation of fire through the magnetism of the storm, temporarily and transitorily conquering the Earth's attribute of solidity.

Thanks to these diverse interactions of opposition and favor, the mystery of the Blizzard operates mainly through effects that limit mobility due to this imbalance in search of solidity. However, thanks to the great presence of fire and air, this imbalance ends up being nullified eventually, which makes the Blizzard an unstable tertiary element that quickly decays into its primary elements, air and water, thus releasing fire.

Sound

Working with the mystery of sound is working with the transience of the primary element Air affected by the opposing element Earth, manifesting air through the material in sound waves that are vibration. The space of conflict between air in search of the null and earth in search of unity and solidity becomes just a moment, with the nature of air prevailing at the end of this dispute, which ends up representing how the magics worked by this mystery act temporarily.

The direct inheritance of the air element allows Sound to travel through solids, through the solidity of the earth present in the material world, thus giving this first (air) a temporary and transitory physical existence that can be understood as an essence close to that of fire, through volatility and the search for breaking the barrier of existence.

Thanks to the way sound operates as a mystery, it ends up receiving subtle influences from the storm, a secondary element of great synergy with the sound itself, operating through vibrations and great excitement of the material with the passage of this vibration that seeks the absence of movement precisely through the absence of existence (nullification).

Dark

One way to understand the dark mystery is to understand that this primordial element is part of a binary existence with light, through existence and non-existence as principles of transition of energy and materiality. As an element, the shadow acts in negation, as a polarity of what is taken as a base or principle. The shadow is the very force that makes light become immobile in order to become material, making all primary elements interactions of these two opposing forces.

The dark mystery operates mainly through negation, similar to what happens with poison, air and even fire, which have their own specific charges of transience towards non-existence, or non-state through nullification. For this reason, the dark mystery acts through the destructuring of the material, also managing to become an unstable material mass precisely because its natural conduction is nullification.

As a primordial element, the shadow acts by destructuring the matter itself so that the light finds an escape and is destabilized in each physical part, causing all the primary elements to be under the direct influence of their opposite element, which is understandable through the charge of opposition brought and makes the shadow a material existence, an attribute received through the manifestation of water, making it temporarily fluid, as it is fleeting and transitory, an attribute that it receives especially through its manifestation of air.

Storm

The mystery of the Storm is based on the secondary element of the same name, an interaction of fire and air, two elements of movement that naturally seek freedom from self-containment. This duality of movement makes the storm element one of the most fleeting, with a momentary and extremely fast existence. The interaction of this harmony causes the primordial nature of Light to manifest itself as a byproduct.

Although it can be confused with another byproduct, electricity is the manifestation of the collision of these two forces in the same tune and intensity, not always visible and of temporary existence through the material excitation of the vehicles through which it is conducted, causing its passage to happen violently.

Due to this primary nature, the by-products tend to connect to the luminous emanation or aggressive nullification of the elements of earth and water, which are driven by induction to the aspect of shadow, of nullification. For this reason, the mystery normally acts in an extremely aggressive and fast way, especially due to the inheritance of double mobility of its generating elements.

Earth

To operate the mystery of the earth is to operate the existence and elemental solidity, obtained through the complete harmony and balance of the primordial elements of light and shadow as primordial principles in a state of elemental existence. The element of the same name has the main attribute of solidity and full manifestation, for this reason the transience of energy is not capable of producing it permanently, which makes this mystery much more focused on molding and transmuting.

The solid nature of the earth demands that in order for it to be operated magically there must be a conduction focus, which causes its transmutation to be operated on a much more subtle energetic level, but extremely expressive in terms of its physicality. This means that the magic of this mystery cannot create the element, but rather group it and transmute it when in its presence.

The earth element, within the derivation structure of light and shadow, as physical and elemental manifestations of these principles, is the element of solidification, which makes everything real and existent, causing transience to be nullified even if momentarily, for this reason this element has its essence imprinted on all other primary elements when they are manifested.

Poison

The element Poison, also known as Vitriol, is the basis of this mystery, a transitional element obtained through the primary element water induction by its opposite element, fire. While water seeks fluidity and is the main vital vehicle, the poison element manifests itself in both poisons and acids, as a principle of dissolution of the material and physical represented by the earth.

The operation of this mystery occurs through the principles of water in internal disharmony provided by dark induction, causing the vital principle itself to be subverted or directly attacked by the way in which fire as an element has a denial of stability, which in turn is perceptible through fire and its desire to propagate, causing both acid and poison to be a transition of water in search of rest through the rebalancing of this energy.

Due to the fluid nature of water combined with that of fire, or even the modification of fluidity resulting from its dark reflection, vitriol can manifest itself physically and even find solidity once it is contained through principles inherent to the earth element, creating a container that provides space for existence while at the same time allowing the fluid nature to maintain itself.

Wind

It is not difficult to find the double reference to this mystery and element that transits between air and wind. The principle of this element and the mystery that studies it, are connected to the understanding of the properties of constant transition of the same and its great reverberation of the shadow element as a form of nullification.

Thanks to these principles, the magic of this mystery acts on the manipulation of the element through the understanding of its internal forces, creating movement in search of movement, as if this energy sought to free itself from itself, a common characteristic caused by the great reverberation of the same with the dark primordial element.

This energetic need for internal conflict makes the ways of operating it self-contained exactly in the manifestations of the element, allowing it to be created through the transit of magical energy, but mainly using it as a manifestation of its dark principle, in search of nullifying the physical and material, transiting to more subtle and dissolved forms.

List of Mysteries of Spiritual Magic

Divination

All possibilities exist until they are realized. The mystery of divination studies ways of understanding the tenuous lines of destiny of everything that exists, understanding the intersection of these lines also called interactions. Divination does not always operate through the understanding of what is not expressed and is only possible; many times it acts only by giving those who practice it a superior notion of facts, understanding cause and effect and being able to understand the outcome of these interactions in advance.

Enchantment

The mystery of enchantment works by enhancing spiritual connections through magical interference caused by will. By using magical energy to enchant something, the expression of the will of the one who works the magic is being imposed on the reality of the world, through a force executed with the understanding of these relationships between the operator and everything that is around him. Enchantment temporarily imbues something with arcane energy to manifest an effect, and can interfere with the most varied forms of existence, whether they are alive or not.

Ethermancy

Mana is the name given to an energy manipulated by those who work magic. Ethermancy is the study of the fundamentals of this energy and how to manipulate it in the most raw way possible.
