Duration: 24 hours
You create a defense that protects up to 2,500 square feet of space (a square area 50 feet on each side, or 100 squares 5 feet on each side, or 25 squares 10 feet on each side). The defended area can be up to 20 feet high and in any shape you desire. You can defend multiple sections of a fortress by dividing the area between them as long as you can walk in each contiguous area while you are casting the spell.
When you cast this spell, you can specify individuals who are unaffected by one or all of the effects of your choice. You can also specify a password that, when spoken aloud, makes the speaker immune to these effects.
Protect Fortress creates the following effects in the defended area.
- Corridors. A fog fills all defended corridors, making them heavily obscured. In addition, at each intersection or branching passage that offers a choice of direction, there is a 50 percent chance that a creature other than you will believe it is going in the opposite direction to the one you chose.
- Stairs. Webs fill all staircases in the defended area, from top to bottom, like spell web. These webs regrow in 10 minutes if they are burned or torn while protecting the fortress.
- Doors. All doors in the secured area are magically blocked, as if sealed by an arcane lock spell. In addition, you can cover up to ten doors with an illusion (equivalent to the illusory object function of the minor illusion spell) to make them appear as continuous sections of the wall.
- Another Magic Effects. You may choose to place one of the following magical effects within the defended area of the fortress.
- Install dancing lights in four corridors. You can set a simple program that the lights will repeat while the fortress protection lasts.
- Place enchanted mouths in two locations.
- Place foul-smelling mist in two locations. The vapors appear in the places you designate; they return within 10 minutes if dispersed by the wind, as long as the protection lasts.
- Put a steady breeze in a hallway or room.
- Put a suggestion in a place. You select a 5-foot-square area, and any creature that enters or passes through the area receives the suggestion mentally.
- The entire defended area radiates spell. A dispel spell cast on a specific effect, if successful, removes only that effect.
You can create a permanently protected and defended structure by casting this spell on it every day for a year.
