Part 4 · Monsters & Creatures
Scuttle Crab
The Scuttle Crab is one of the most well-known creatures in Runeterra, in part because it’s present in practically every region. Adventurers, explorers, and travelers often seek out Scuttle Crabs during long journeys due to their ability to create protective sanctuaries when threatened. Although it isn’t an easy task, some seek out Scuttle Crabs to use as material, whether for cooking or crafting magic items.
Swift Sanctuary
When a Scuttle Crab is defeated in combat, it remains submerged and motionless, keeping only its antennae visible. In doing so, it becomes untargetable and creates an area with a radius in feet equal to 5 times the Scuttle Crab’s proficiency bonus around the point where it submerged, where the following effects apply:
- Invisibility, illusion, or transformation effects within the area are ignored, as if seen by a creature with Truesight.
- Creatures within the area have their speed increased by 15 feet; this effect remains for 1 minute after leaving the area.
- When resting within the area, creatures can roll their hit dice twice, keeping the higher result of the two.
Rewards
Scuttle Crabs are difficult to capture and offer benefits when not slain, which makes many adventurers choose only to scare them off to make use of their Swift Sanctuary. Despite this, a Scuttle Crab’s body has several uses.
If a fisherman or group of adventurers manages to capture a Scuttle Crab, there are some Materials that can be obtained from it with the Collector: Biologist Craft.
Using the Biologist’s Dissect formula, the formula works as follows for the Scuttle Crab’s parts:
| Material Obtained | DC | Fast | Medium | Slow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scuttle Crab Shell | 13 | 1 action | 1 minute | 5 minutes |
| Scuttle Crab Meat | 13 | 1 action | 1 minute | 5 minutes |
| Scuttle Crab Claws | 13 | 1 action | 1 minute | 5 minutes |
| Scuttle Crab Legs | 15 | 1 minute | 5 minutes | 10 minutes |
| Scuttle Crab Antennae | 21 | - | 1 hour | 2 hours |
Item Crafting
A single Scuttle Crab has 1 shell, between 1 to 3 kilograms of meat, 2 claws, 6 legs, and 1 pair of antennae, which can be used as follows:
- Its Shell can be used by a creature with the Armorer Craft to create a Light Shield.
- Its Meat can be used by a creature with the Cook Craft to create Field Rations, Advanced Field Rations, or a Scuttle Crab Pie.
- Its Claws can be used by a creature with the Weaponsmith Craft to create Bludgeoning weapons.
- Its Antennae can be used by a creature with the Apothecary Craft to create a Potion of Revelation.
Formulas
The Potion of Revelation is a special potion that grants a creature the temporary ability to see invisible creatures, and can be created using a pair of Scuttle Crab antennae as the main ingredient. An Apothecary must have the specific knowledge to create it.

Characteristics
Amphibious. The Scuttle Crab can breathe both water and air.
Pacifist. Scuttle Crabs are pacifist creatures by nature, not making attacks against creatures even when threatened by them. The Scuttle Crab's Charge deals no damage at all unless the affected creature has dealt damage to the Scuttle Crab.
Swiftness. The Scuttle Crab can use the Disengage, Dash, or Dodge action as a bonus action.
Strategic Retreat. If reduced below 3 hit points without dying immediately, the Scuttle Crab can use a reaction (or a bonus action on its turn) to dive into the nearest mud, earth, or body of water and create a Swift Sanctuary with a 10-foot radius, becoming completely immune to any damage or external effect until there are no longer any creatures it considers a threat within its field of view, which causes it to leave its hiding place and cancel the Sanctuary's effect.
Disposable. Scuttle Crabs take double damage from effects that require saving throws, except Dexterity saving throws. Additionally, even if it succeeds on a Failure effect or spell that isn't Dexterity-based, the Scuttle Crab takes the damage normally instead of taking only half damage.
Keen Vision. The Scuttle Crab has advantage on Perception checks that rely on sight.
Attacks
Charge (Recharge 6). The Scuttle Crab can advance 20 feet in a direction with an action, without provoking opportunity attacks. Targets in the area make a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw, taking 1 (1d2) Bludgeoning damage and being pushed 10 feet from the Scuttle Crab on a failure. On a success, the Scuttle Crab continues along its path without dealing damage or pushing creatures.
Claw. Melee Natural Weapon Attack, +0 to hit, 5 ft. reach, one target. On a hit, deals 2 (3d2-2) Bludgeoning damage.
